The syrup is pure carbs, since it's sugar. The butter is fat, but no carbs. I was trying to lose weight a while back and I was on a low fat diet, I followed it strictly but lost no weight, just felt weak for months. I realized that wasn't working, so I tried a low carb diet and lost 60 lbs. It became obvious what was doing me in- the carbs, not the fat. My caloric intake on the low carb diet is much higher than it was on the low fat diet since fat is permitted and fat has the highest concentration of calories. So I didn't lose the weight from having a lower calorie intake, I lost the weight by lowering my carb intake, namely simple carbs like sugar, pasta, and white bread.
